Passy-Muir https://www.passy-muir.com/ was founded in 1985 by David Muir and Patricia Passy.  David Muir had been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy and eventually became ventilator-dependent and, as a result, was unable to speak.  David experienced first-hand the isolation and frustration caused by the loss of his voice and used his scientific background to invent a speaking valve that could be used on and off the ventilator.  Passy-Muir has become a global company committed to their efforts to bring the dignity of speech to patients with tracheostomies or ventilator-dependent patients.
